Top Ten Things To Do In Missouri This Spring

Those of you that are new to the Fort Leonard Wood area may be asking yourself "What is there to do around here?" As someone who has lived in Missouri her entire life, I (Heather) would be happy to share with you my Top 10 favorite things to do here this spring!

10*Frog Fest- A Waynesville tradition, it doesn't get any more "small town America" than this! Bring the family to Waynesville City Park on Saturday, May 15th for the best fair foods (alligator on a stick, deep fried tweenkies, funnel cakes, you name it!), live entertainment, booths, games, and of course.... a frog race!

9*Meramec Caverns, Sullivan- The largest commercial cave out of Missouri's 6000 caves, Meramec Caverns is Missouri's "burried treasure". See some of the rarest and largest cave formations in the world. Go for a day or camp for the weekend! http://www.americascave.com/

8*Hiking & Biking- Take advantage of living in the beautiful Ozarks... get out and enoy it! http://www.missouri-hiking.com/

7*Discovery Center, Springfield- Science, education, creativity, imagination and free-play collide in one explosive center. One of my kids' favorites! Where else can you dig for dinosaur bones, build and fly your own airplane, climb inside a giant eyeball, give the five o'clock evening news report, perform surgery and capture your own shadow?  http://www.discoverycenter.org/

6*Hannibal- Spend a day or a weekend walking in Mark Twain's shoes! http://www.visithannibal.com/

5*Branson- What's not to love about Branson with with more than 50 live performance theaters, three pristine lakes, 12 championship golf courses, an international award-winning theme park, dozens of attractions and museums, an Historic Downtown district, shopping galore, a full range of dining options, and a host of hotels, motels, resorts, RV parks, campgrounds and meeting and conference facilities. Whew! http://www.explorebranson.com/

4*Kansas City- Any city slickers achin' to get back to civilization? Escape to KC for the weekend! Spend a weekend hanging out on the Plaza. Shop and dine with the best of them! http://www.visitkc.com/

3*St Louis- My hometown! Soooo much to do! The St Louis Zoo is a must! 5000 animals from 700 species on 90 acres, including an insectarium, a children's zoo, and a miniature train. The best free zoo in the country! http://www.stlzoo.org/ Spend a romantic weekend in Forrest Park touring the Jewel Box and the Art Museum. Go for a picnic or a bike ride. Take the kids to the Turtle Playground or the Science Center. Go on a Segway tour. DEFINITELY come back in the summer to catch a play at the Muny. http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/parks/forestpark/

2*The Lake- "The Lake" means one thing in Missouri... the beautiful Lake of The Ozarks! Personally, I enjoy shopping at the outlets in Osage Beach, but there's tons to do at The Lake including boating, fishing, golfing, water parks and more. http://www.lakelinks.com/

1*Hermann- Probably Missouri's best kept secret, Hermann is one of the most beautiful towns you'll find in the country! Nestled along the banks of the Missouri River, just 90 minutes from downtown Saint Louis the City of Hermann is a picturesque German Community offering Old-World hospitality and the quiet charms of an earlier time. With an abundance of spectacular views, more than 150 historic buildings, quaint inn and B&Bs, world class wineries, museums, shops and galleries, and fine dining, Hermann is the perfect place for romantic retreats. It is a perfect getaway not far from home! http://www.hermannmissouri.com/
